At Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai, they successfully performed India’s first-ever LAMPOON-TMVR procedure on a 76-year-old cardiac patient who had previously undergone open heart surgery.
The LAMPOON (Laceration of the Anterior Mitral Leaflet to Prevent Outflow Obstruction) procedure stands as a transcatheter electrosurgical technique that involves splitting the anterior mitral valve leaflet just moments before a Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR) takes place. This innovative approach opens up new possibilities for cardiac patients who have already undergone prior open heart surgery and face high risks associated with subsequent surgical interventions.
Dr. Ravinder Singh Rao sheds light on the significance of the LAMPOON procedure, explaining that mitral valve stenosis, which restricts blood flow into the heart’s main pumping chamber, often necessitates TMVR as a highly effective and minimally invasive treatment for elderly patients with degenerated mitral valves. However, complications can arise when the heart leaflet obstructs blood flow, posing a life-threatening situation known as Left Ventricular Outflow Tract (LVOT) obstruction. By employing electrosurgery and delicately cutting the leaflet with an electrified wire, the team overcomes this challenge.
